Quotations, misquotations, metaquotations, misattributions, tributes, etc. in classic rock.

Here are some examples of metaQuotations in various forms:
Musicians quoting famous people and having the quote attributed to them-

Jimi Hendrix is often quoted as saying,"When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace."

but was no doubt quoting (or misquoting) former British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone, who said, "We look forward to the time when the Power of Love will replace the Love of Power. Then will our world know the blessings of peace."

John Lennon sang, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans" in Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)

"Life is what happens to us while we are making other plans."
- Thomas LaMance

often attributed to U2 (but quoting Gloria Steinem) in "Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World" - "A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle."

Musicians quoting other musicians-

Pink Floyd throws a reference to to the John Lennon (or Beatles) song "Across the Universe" into the song Echos on the album Meddle with "inciting and inviting me"

cf-

Across the Universe by The Beatles

Words are flying out like endless rain into a paper cup,
They slither wildly as they slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my open mind,
Possessing and caressing me.
Jai Guru Deva Om
Nothing's gonna change my world,
Nothing's gonna change my world.

Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes,
That call me on and on across the universe,
Thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letter box they
Tumble blindly as they make their way
Across the universe
Jai Guru Deva Om
Nothing's gonna change my world,
Nothing's gonna change my world.

Sounds of laughter shades of love are ringing
Through my open ears inciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love which shines around me like a
Million suns, it calls me on and on
Across the universe
Jai Guru Deva Om
Nothing's gonna change my world,
Nothing's gonna change my world.

and a clear tribute by Pink Floyd with Echoes-

Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
In labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant time
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine

And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the wheres or whys
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb toward the light

Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can

And no one calls us to move on
And no one forces down our eyes
And no one speaks and no one tries
And no one flies around the sun

Cloudless everyday you fall upon my waking eyes
Inciting and inviting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Comes streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning

And no one sings me lullabyes
And no one makes me close my eyes
And so I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky

Jimi Hendrix frequently played "Sunshine of Your Love" by Cream in concert, probably unaware that the song was written by Cream as a tribute to him.
